Remembering What Jesus Did
During communion, we reflect on the humility of Jesus—how He took on human flesh, went to the cross, and gave Himself fully for us. But today’s message goes even deeper. Not only do we remember what He did, but we explore why He did it. Jesus Himself explained His purpose, and Scripture confirms it again and again.
We don’t have to guess. We don’t have to hope we’re interpreting Him correctly. We have His own words and the clear testimony of Scripture.
Let’s look at several powerful reasons Jesus came to Earth—and what those reasons mean for us today.
1. Jesus Came to Fulfill the Law and the Prophets
Jesus says plainly in Matthew 5:17:
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.”
He came to complete what over 300 Old Testament prophecies foretold:
Where He would be born
How He would live
What He would teach
How He would die
What His mission would accomplish
He fulfilled every prophecy precisely—born in Bethlehem, living as the Scriptures said He would, and completing the Father’s plan with accuracy only God could orchestrate.
Hebrews 1:1–2 reminds us that God once spoke through prophets, but in these last days, He speaks through His Son.
Jesus came to reveal God’s plan—not to erase the old covenant, but to fulfill it and usher in the new.
2. Jesus Came Not to Be Served, but to Serve
Matthew 20:28 tells us:
“The Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”
Jesus lived the life of a servant:
Healing the sick
Teaching the crowds
Washing the disciples’ feet
Giving His life for humanity
He fulfilled every prophecy about the coming Shepherd, the Suffering Servant, and the Messiah who would lay down His life for His people.
And He calls us to follow in His example—not seeking greatness, but serving with humility.
3. Jesus Came to Seek and Save the Lost
Luke 19:10 states one of the clearest mission statements Jesus ever gave:
“For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”
The Greek word for lost is not casual. It means:
Destroyed
Ruined
Perishing
Heading toward a miserable and permanent end
Merry Christmas, right? But truly—it is good news. Because Jesus came to save us from that fate.
Without Christ, Scripture says we are already condemned. But through Him, we pass from death to life.
1 Corinthians 5:18–19 assures us:
God is “not counting our trespasses against us,” but reconciling us to Himself through Christ.
That is the rescue mission of Jesus.
4. Jesus Came to Introduce the Kingdom of God
In Luke 4:43, Jesus says:
“I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God… for I was sent for this purpose.”
Jesus came to reveal:
What the Kingdom is
How it operates
Who the King is
What life looks like under His rule
He taught the Kingdom through:
The Sermon on the Mount
Parables
Miracles
His own example
What is the Kingdom of God?
Jesus defines it in the Lord’s Prayer:
“Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done.”
Where His will is done, His Kingdom has come.
But for His Kingdom to come in our lives, we must step off the throne of our own hearts and let Jesus rule.
This is the hardest battle many believers face—not against Satan, but against self.
5. Jesus Came to Do the Will of His Father
Jesus said in John 6:38:
“I have come down from heaven not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.”
And then He tells us exactly what that will is:
“That everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him will have eternal life.”
This is the heart of Christmas. This is the heart of the Gospel. This is the heart of God.
Every miracle, every sermon, every act of compassion, every confrontation with darkness was driven by one purpose:
That we might believe in Him and receive eternal life.
6. Jesus Came to Create a New Kind of Humanity
2 Corinthians 5:17 declares:
“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature.”
Jesus didn’t come to make bad people good.He came to make dead people alive.
Romans 5 explains the contrast:
Adam’s sin brought death
Jesus’ obedience brings life
Adam’s failure brought condemnation
Jesus’ righteousness brings justification
Even greater is God’s grace.
No matter how deep the sin, God’s grace is deeper still. No matter how heavy the guilt, His forgiveness weighs more. No matter how broken the life, His restoration is stronger.
7. Jesus Came to Rescue Us from Darkness
Colossians 1:13 announces:
“He has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of His dear Son.”
We weren’t injured—we were enslaved.We weren’t struggling—we were dead in sin.We didn’t need advice—we needed rescuing.
Just like we rescue helpless animals, God rescued helpless humans.
Now we have:
A new home
A new Father
A new family
A new identity
A new future
8. Jesus Came to Give Us Abundant Life
John 10:10 closes the message with hope:
“The thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy… but I have come that they may have life and have it more abundantly.”
Jesus didn’t come to restrict us—He came to restore us. He didn’t come to condemn us—He came to liberate us.He didn’t come to burden us—He came to bless us.
As we celebrate this season, we don’t just celebrate His birth. We celebrate:
His mission
His love
His sacrifice
His Kingdom
His rescue
His new life
His abundant blessings
This is the meaning of Christmas.
Keep a Short Account With God
Toward the end of the message, we’re reminded:
When you sin, don’t run from God. Run to Him.
Keep a short list. Deal with things quickly. Let Him cleanse your heart again and again.
“Come now, let us reason together,” says the Lord. “Though your sins are scarlet, they shall be white as snow.”
