A Word That Wouldn’t Let Go
I’m excited about what I believe the Lord has put on my heart.
Back in early December, I heard the Lord begin to speak to me—so clearly it felt weighty, like the Holy Spirit pressing on my heart. And I had that question many of us have asked:
“Lord, is this word for me… or is it something You want me to share with the church?”
So I prayed every day. And week after week it stayed heavy.
Then one Saturday morning, I prayed again: “Lord, this is not leaving me. Show me clearly if I’m supposed to go to Bishop and say I believe You’ve given me a word for Your children.”
And right after that prayer… the phone rang.
The Confirmation (That Still Blows My Mind)
Cecelia called me and said, “Donna, I had to call you. You’re not going to believe what just happened.”
She told me she had been praying, reading the Word, and then laid down to rest—and she saw a vision: golden flakes falling (like manna), and then portraits—like pencil sketches—of saints from Scripture and beyond, people who had gone on before us. And the Holy Spirit revealed who they were—Moses, Abraham…
And I told her, “Cecelia… you’re not going to believe this. The title the Lord gave me a week ago is: ‘Surrounded by Such a Great Cloud of Witnesses.’”
That was confirmation. God’s timing is perfect. And today, I’m sharing the word: Stay the course.
The Heart of the Message: Stay the Course (For Believers—and Seekers)
This is a message to believers—to encourage you to keep moving forward with Jesus.
And it’s also a message to anyone who doesn’t know Christ yet but desires to. There is such richness in giving your life to Jesus.
1) Surrounded: Run With Endurance (Hebrews 12:1–2)
The foundation verse is Hebrews 12:1–2:
Because we’re surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, we lay aside every weight and the sin that so easily ensnares us, and we run with endurance the race set before us—looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith.
That’s the assignment.
The Bible Is a Redemption Story (and It’s God-Breathed)
The Bible is a redemption story between God and man, written by the Holy Spirit. And yes—even Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and those genealogies—it’s all God-breathed and useful.
And throughout Scripture we see men and women whose faith wasn’t just theory—it was their story. Their obedience and trust in God continue to encourage believers down through the ages: trust God no matter what.
A Powerful Witness: Daniel and the Three Hebrews in Babylon
The message focuses in on a group of young men carried into captivity when Babylon laid siege to Jerusalem:
Hananiah
Mishael
Azariah
Daniel
They were likely in their late teens—young—and they were ripped from everything they loved, taken about 900 miles by foot, and dropped into a foreign culture with foreign gods. And their captivity wasn’t a short season. It was 70 years.
Babylon Tried to Steal Their Identity
Their names were changed to honor false gods:
Hananiah → Shadrach
Mishael → Meshach
Azariah → Abednego
Daniel → Belteshazzar
Babylon’s goal was to disconnect them from their God-given identity and heritage. And here’s the point for us:
The enemy still has a strategy to disconnect you from your faith and get you to believe lies that are opposite of what God says.
We’re In the World—But Not of It (John 17)
Jesus prayed that we wouldn’t be taken out of the world, but that we would be protected from the evil one—and sanctified by truth. God’s Word is truth.
So knowing your identity in Christ matters—because when you go through the fire, you’ll need something deeper than feelings to stand on.
Your Identity in Christ (Ephesians 1 + 1 Peter 2:9)
The message highlights what Scripture says about us in Christ:
chosen before the foundation of the world
loved and accepted
adopted
forgiven
lavished with grace
sealed with the Holy Spirit
And 1 Peter 2:9 says we are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation—God’s special possession—called out of darkness into His wonderful light.
That’s who you are—if you belong to Jesus.
God’s Word Sustains Faith (Jeremiah 29 in Babylon)
God sent His people a letter through Jeremiah—words that carried them through captivity:
Build houses. Plant gardens. Seek the peace of the city. Pray for it. And after 70 years, God would bring them back—because He had thoughts of peace, a future, and a hope.
The Word of God is vital to your faith walk. You don’t stay strong by accident—you stay strong by feeding on His Word.
“Purposed in His Heart”: Don’t Compromise (Daniel 1)
Daniel purposed in his heart not to defile himself. He asked for vegetables and water for ten days instead of the king’s food offered to false gods—something you don’t usually hear coming from a teenage boy. 😄
But God’s favor was on them. Their faces were brighter, and the king found them ten times better in wisdom and understanding than the others.
The Fiery Furnace: Faith That Won’t Bow (Daniel 3)
Years later, King Nebuchadnezzar built a golden image and commanded everyone to bow. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refused.
And their response is one of the clearest statements of courage in Scripture:
Our God is able to deliver us.
But if not… we still will not bow.
They were thrown into a furnace so hot it killed the soldiers who carried them. But then the king saw something impossible:
Four men… loose… walking in the fire… and the fourth like the Son of God.
They came out:
not burned
not singed
and without even the smell of smoke
And their faith affected a nation.
“What Is Your Babylon?”
The message asks a question that lands right where we live:
What is your Babylon? What testing have you been going through?
God’s grace and His indwelling presence is what enables us to come through—without even the scent of fire on us.
2) Roaring Lion: Know Your Enemy and Resist in Faith (1 Peter 5)
We have an enemy of our faith.
Scripture says the devil is like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. So we’re called to be sober and vigilant—and to resist him steadfast in faith, remembering we are not alone in suffering.
And we don’t fight people. We wrestle against spiritual forces—so we put on the whole armor of God.
3) Tribulations: Be of Good Cheer—Jesus Overcame (John 16:33)
No one likes tribulation. But Jesus told us the truth:
“In this world you will have tribulation, but be of good cheer—I have overcome the world.”
James says trials test our faith and produce patience/endurance—growing us into maturity. And Romans reminds us that present suffering can’t compare with the glory that’s coming.
And here’s what many of us have found: it’s often in the trial that we come to know God more deeply—as:
Way Maker
Miracle Worker
Promise Keeper
Light in the darkness
4) Promises: God’s Word Never Gets Old
The message lists promise after promise—because God’s promises fuel endurance.
Just a few highlighted:
Isaiah 41:10 — “Fear not… I will strengthen you and help you.”
Hebrews 13:5 — “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
Isaiah 40:31 — “They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength.”
Romans 8:28 — God works all things for good for those who love Him.
Romans 8:35–39 — nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ.
Lamentations 3:22–23 — new mercies every morning… great is His faithfulness.
The Word is God’s love letter to you—set time aside every day to read it.
5) Our Response: Renew Your Mind, Pray, and Fix Your Eyes on Jesus
So what do we do with all of this?
Don’t be conformed—be transformed (Romans 12:2)
Renew your mind. Let God reshape your thinking.
When anxiety hits—don’t stay there (Philippians 4:6–7)
Pray. Give thanks. Present your requests to God. And He promises peace that passes understanding.
Cast your cares (1 Peter 5:7)
Because He cares for you.
When you don’t know what to do…
This line is gold:
“We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on You.” (2 Chronicles 20:12)
It’s okay to say, “Lord, I don’t know.” Just don’t stop there—fix your eyes on Jesus.
Live and Cleave
As the message reflects on the faithful ones who came before us, two words rise up:
live
cleave
Like Daniel and the three Hebrews, like Ruth and Rahab—leave false gods behind and cleave to the Lord.
And if you’re a believer and there’s something in your life that shouldn’t be there—leave it behind. If you’re not a believer, you can leave your old life behind and give your life to Jesus today.
If you’re in a “Babylon” season—press in, don’t back up.
Stay the course.Lay aside the weight.Resist the roaring lion.Feed on the promises. And when you don’t know what to do, say it out loud:
“Lord… my eyes are on You.”
