For This Purpose: Jesus Came to Destroy the Works of the Devil

If you’ve ever wondered, “Is this still true today?”— I want to go straight to a verse I’ve enjoyed for years, and I enjoy it every time I read it.

1 John 3:8 (second half) says: “For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.”

That scripture is still in effect.

And there are four big words in that line that shape the whole message:

  • Purpose

  • Manifested

  • Works

  • Destroy

Let’s walk through them in a way that’s clear, real, and encouraging — because this isn’t just theology. This is hope.

Purpose: God Doesn’t Do Anything Without One

The first major word is purpose.

God doesn’t do anything “just because.” Everything He does has intent behind it. God isn’t idle — He’s working and moving in the hearts of men, women, and children all around the world and right here at home.

And I’ll say it like this: there’s a surge of faith toward God happening—something we haven’t seen in a long time. It reminds me of the Jesus Revolution / Jesus People movement of the 1970s. Some of what God did then became part of the foundation of what we’re living in now.

I think it’s important to remember:

  • Jesus didn’t arrive randomly.

  • Heaven didn’t improvise.

  • There was a mission.

  • There was a plan.

Jesus came with a purpose—and it was a rescue purpose.

Jesus’ Purpose Was a Seek-and-Save Mission

Jesus came to seek and save those who were lost—and praise God, He found us.

Manifested: God Came Near (For Real)

The second word is manifested.

When we say “the Son of God was manifested,” we’re talking about what we celebrate at Advent and Christmas—that God came to us. Emmanuel: God with us.

Jesus didn’t just send a message. He showed up.

The Word Became Flesh

As Scripture says, “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” (John 1:14)

In plain language: God put on skin. He entered the human experience:

  • hunger

  • thirst

  • sweat

  • lack

  • abundance

  • relationships

  • betrayal

God didn’t have to do that—but He loved us so much that He did.

“For God so loved the world…” (John 3:16)

Jesus stepped out of that divine, celestial dimension and walked into our broken world—because He came to make a difference.

And the rest of 1 John 3:8 tells us exactly what that difference was meant to be.

Works: The Devil Has a “Business” (But Jesus Came to Shut It Down)

Now let’s talk about the word works.

The Bible says Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil—and the way it’s described here is powerful: it’s the devil’s business, his enterprise, what he undertakes to do.

Jesus came and basically said: “Enough. It’s time.”

The Works of Darkness vs. the Light of Christ

Isaiah prophesied: “Those who sat in darkness have seen a great light.”

Sometimes you don’t realize how dark something is until the light turns on. (I’ve seen it in everyday life—someone struggling to read until the light flips on, and suddenly it’s like, “Oh…that was darker than I thought.”)

Jesus is that Light. And when He came, the glory of God became visible in human form.

The Devil’s Job Description (John 10:10)

Here’s a clear snapshot of the enemy’s “work”:

  • steal

  • kill

  • destroy

But Jesus says something right alongside it:

  • life

  • abundant life

Abundant life isn’t just “more stuff.” It’s deeper than that:

  • peace when there’s turmoil around you

  • courage when fear is shouting

  • stability when everything feels shaky

And yes—Jesus is still King. King on the cross, King in the grave, King when He rose, King when He ascended, and King when He returns.

The Enemy Works Through Fear, Bondage, and Lies

Look around and you can see it: the culture is drowning in anxiety and dread. People are reaching for anything that feels like relief:

  • substances

  • counterfeit spirituality

  • false religions

  • “anything except Jesus” resistance

But Jesus is the answer. He’s still the answer. And He’ll always be the answer.

And let me say this clearly: the people of God didn’t get here because we’re “angelic.” We’ve tried the other junk. That’s why we’re here—because Jesus actually changes lives.

The Enemy Tries to Keep You Out of the Blessing

Sometimes the enemy targets something as simple as getting you discouraged, heavy, and “too tired” to show up.

But when you press through the aches, the stiffness, the depression, the oppression—when you press through what the enemy brings—there’s blessing on the other side.

Because those who are planted in the house of the Lord will flourish.

The Devil Doesn’t Just Attack Bodies—He Attacks Dreams

Yes, the enemy is destructive in obvious ways. But he also kills:

  • dreams

  • possibilities

  • potential

  • opportunities

He tries to get you on the wrong track so you miss what God had for you.

But I love this truth:

Jesus turns dead ends into unlimited possibilities.

“Bond Can Lead to Bondage”

Here’s a word that needs to be heard (especially by young men and women):

Be careful who you hook up with, associate with, and bond with—because your bond can lead to bondage.

The enemy loves toxic relationships, captivity, addictions, and traps that drain you and drag you down.

Destroy: Jesus Didn’t Come to “Manage” Bondage—He Came to Undo It

Now we come to the fourth word: destroy.

This is Jesus’ counter-mission: to confront Satan’s works and stop the mayhem.

But here’s what’s important—this word doesn’t simply mean “annihilate.” It carries the idea of undoing.

The Greek word described here means:

  • undo

  • unravel

  • unbind

  • release

  • set free

So yes—the devil can make a mess. But Jesus knows where the ends are. He knows how to straighten it out if you put it in His hands.

Jesus Can Unwrap What’s Been Wounding You

One image I love is this: someone bound up like they’re wrapped in bandages.

Why do people need bandages? Because they’ve been wounded.

Jesus doesn’t just want to remove what’s wrapped around your life—He wants to heal what’s underneath it.

That’s Savior work. That’s Friend work. That’s freedom work.

Stop Giving the Enemy Authority With Your Own Mouth

Sometimes we hand authority back to the enemy by repeating his lies:

  • “I’m no good.”

  • “I’ll never make it.”

  • “God can’t use me.”

  • “This will never change.”

At some point we have to say, “Hold on—what does God say?”

And God says:

“For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.” 2026-01-04

So here’s a real question:

What Needs to Be Undone in Your Life?

What areas in your life (or your family, your neighborhood, your city, your nation) need the works of the devil destroyed?

Because Jesus came to destroy the destroyer—to rescue, heal, and deliver.

Freedom Is What We’re Believing for 2026

This is my hope in sharing this message: that you leave encouraged.

At The Love Church, we’re involved in Kingdom business. This is a hospital. This is a house of freedom. This is a place where people can come in 2026 and find freedom in Jesus:

  • freedom from addiction

  • freedom from depression

  • freedom from the yoke of slavery

Because Scripture says:

“It was for freedom that Christ has set us free.” (Galatians 5:1) 2026-01-04

Jesus didn’t come to help us manage bondage.

He came to set us free—and keep us free.

A Bigger Vision: Igniting the Nations With Christ’s Love

We’re also part of something larger—a wider spiritual family with a real mission. Plans are being made for gospel work across the Pacific Rim—places like:

  • Australia

  • New Zealand

  • West Papua New Guinea

  • American Samoa / Samoa

  • Indonesia 2026-01-04

And the heart behind it is simple:

Jesus said, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel.”

Not just “come in and have church once in a while”… (though I’m not against a good church dinner—especially if someone brings that meatloaf with the sweet ketchup topping.)

But there’s a world out there that needs Jesus—and we’re asking God to keep giving us ways to reach them.
